The loads that need six-foot walls
Multi-room renovations where framing, drywall, flooring, and fixtures come out in waves. Additions and garage conversions. Retail buildouts and commercial property clearings. New-construction offcuts — siding, sheathing, packaging — that pile faster than anyone expects. This is bulky, mostly light material, and bulky-light is exactly what 30 cubic yards is for.
The container measures 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide, and 6 feet high. It occupies the same ground as our 20-yard box; the extra capacity is all in the walls. What does not belong here is a full load of concrete, dirt, or brick — dense material reaches the legal hauling weight long before it reaches the rim, which is why heavy debris is quoted into the 15-yard box with a controlled fill level instead.
Storm and flood cleanup volume
Columbia has seen what water does to a house. Over the first days of October 2015, the city broke its all-time wettest one-day, two-day, and three-day rainfall records, in an event rated between a 1-in-100 and a 1-in-1000-year storm — and the Gills Creek corridor through Forest Acres took some of the worst of it. Gutting a flooded home means soaked drywall, flooring, insulation, and furniture, all at once. That is 30-yard volume, and often more than one haul.
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, peaking around September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. When tropical remnants cross the Midlands in that window, cleanup boxes book fast — call early. One caution on storm debris: South Carolina law keeps loads that are mostly yard trash out of municipal solid waste landfills, so limbs and brush travel as their own stream, separate from the gutted-interior load.
Loading behind a six-foot wall
Nobody tosses a sofa over a six-foot side. Open the rear door, walk the heavy and awkward pieces in, and stack back-to-front, low and level. Keep everything below the top rail and keep the door swing clear through the last day — a box that cannot close is a box that cannot leave. On active sites, protect the truck path as material deliveries and parking fill the site around the container.
What the load costs at the gate

The county's rate for improperly separated mixed loads is $54.00 per ton — reason enough to keep the concrete out of the reno box and the brush pile out of both. One 30 usually wins when the debris arrives in a steady stream from one site — the walls are taller but the footprint matches the 20, so it costs no extra driveway. Two smaller boxes make sense when the job produces two different materials, like a clean concrete load and a mixed load, or when two work areas cannot share one truck path. Can I load concrete or soil into a 30-yard container?
Not as a full load. Dense material hits the legal hauling weight long before it reaches the rim of a 6-foot wall, so concrete, dirt, brick, and similar debris are quoted into a smaller box with a controlled fill level. A layer of heavy debris in a mixed renovation load is a different conversation — tell us what the job produces and we set the allowance honestly.
Does a 30-yard box on a Columbia jobsite need a permit?
Not when it sits entirely on private property. In a street, sidewalk, or other public right-of-way inside Columbia, the placement is a temporary encroachment that needs city approval before the drop — and a second SCDOT permit where the state maintains the road. Our permit page walks through both.
